The Cultural Impact of New York Nightlife (Video)

New York is defined by its nightlife. Everything from the history of the city to the sensibility of its residents is connected to the bar and the dance floor in some way. But the fundamental importance of this lifestyle has been belittled ever since Prohibition.  There has been very little serious debate on the positive impacts of nightlife culture on New York City.

NCI organized a panel of experts to discuss and debate this topic at our Nightlife Culture Expo. This video shows some of the insight and prickly perspectives that nightlife culture generates.

Special Thanks to:

Madison Moore: Post-Doctoral Fellow in Theater + Dance at the University of Richmond

Shonali Bhowmik: President of Little Lamb Records

Paul Seres: Founder of the New York City Hospitality Alliance and Owner of The DL

Steven Lewis: Owner of Steven Lewis Design and Nightlife Correspondent for Black Book Magazine

Have fun.

What Does New York Nightlife Mean to You?

In spite of what people on the outside think, New York nightlife is not a single monolithic entity. There are literally hundreds of sub genres, cliques and variations in what goes on at night. There are as many opinions of what nightlife is as there are people who go out.

We posed this philosophical question to a diverse group of nightlife owners, operators, musicians and patrons during our Nightlife Culture Expo. While each person approached the question from a different perspective; the recurring themes of creativity, diversity and freedom are very strong. Almost every participant saw nightlife as a lifestyle choice. It is far more than a random drink at a random bar. It is part of what defines their life and their identity.

So, what does New York nightlife mean to you?

Have fun.

The Fall 2012 Edition of 21 Essential Websites for Nightlife Culture

Nightlife is a constantly changing world. Websites are a constantly changing source of information. Logic would suggest that websites about nightlife change as often as the hot club of the moment. In the spring, we offered our first list of essential websites for natives interested in nightlife culture. In attempt to stay current, we are updating the list.

Many of the sites we originally showcased have returned. We have added one new music site that will provide more assistance in finding music to listen to (although for all its lethal faults, myspace was still the best way to find new music). We have also totally revamped the fashion, beer and wine sites to ones that are more relevant, up to date and informative.

If you have any suggestions for sites that we might have missed, please let us know at info@nightlifeculture.org
